Wind Energy Boost For North of England to The Tune of £2.6 million

Almost 30 companies from the North of England applied for a share in the funding from the Northern Way; a collaboration of the northern development agencies, the North West Regional Development Agency, One Northeast and Yorkshire Forward. The programme launched in June 2009 is being delivered by Envirolink Northwest and the New and Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC).
Eleven consortia made up of 38 companies based in the North of England were selected against strict technical and economic criteria. They all demonstrated excellent standards in innovation in support of the offshore wind industry.
The successful projects and their collaborative partners are:

• Romax Technology Ltd and the University of Sheffield
• Siemens and University of Manchester Vulcan SFM Ltd and SNC Lavalin UK Ltd
• Siemens and Sheffield University
• Systems Ltd and Ricardo UK Ltd
• TWI Ltd, University of Manchester, Monitor Coatings, McNulty Offshore, VattenFall Wind Power
• TWI Ltd, University of Sheffield, CRM Ltd, SKM, J. Walker and Airtricity
• Xanthus Energy Ltd, Able UK Ltd and Ekspan Ltd
The Northern Wind Innovation Programme outlined three classifications for projects, AC/DC electrical conversion, foundation system optimization and installation technologies and bearing quality improvement.
The team from NWIP will continue to support the sector by organizing inward delegations, stimulating innovation by holding workshops, providing support to companies looking to diversify and by providing marketing information.
